Before Bamenda City Council

Ngemba Council

The Bamenda City Council began in the 1960s. In 1962 the Ngemba Council was carved out of Widikum Council to cater for the Ngemba tribe of Mezam Division, which are Mankon, Nsongwa, Mbafu, Mundum, Pinyin and Awing with Mankon as the headquarters. The Council was responsible for the Local administration of the lower and upper Ngemba tribes.

Mankon Urban Town Council – Mankon Area Council

In 1964, Mankon urban town council was born out of the Ngemba Council to serve the urban area of Mankon which include areas like Ntambeng, Ntamulung, Mulang, Musang… In 1968, the name was change from The Mankon Urban Town Council to Makon Area Council with president being Fon A.N Angwafor III.

Mankon Rural Council – Bamenda Urban Council

In 1972 after the referendum of the United Republic of Cameroon, the name of the council was change to the Mankon Rural Council. The status of the council was then raised from rural to urban. It was then called the Bamenda Urban Council (BUC), with special status to be appointed by the state. The Nkwen and Mendankwe Council, which were formerly under the Tubah Council were brought under the Bamenda Urban Council.

Bamenda City Council

Presidential decree of 17𝑡ℎ January 2008 dissolved the Bamenda Urban Council leading to the formation of Bamenda City Council with Bamenda I, II and II sub-divisional councils administratively attached.

Law No.000280/A/MINDDEVEL of 6th March 2020 confirmed the election of Mr. Achobong Tambeng Paul as City Council Mayor and his deputies MR. NDOH DAVID CHI as the Frist Deputy Mayor and MR. LUCAS NGU AFONG as the second Deputy Mayor after the Municipal Election of February 2020 in Bamenda City Council, Mezam Division, North West, Cameroon.

Law No.000280/A/MINDDEVEL of 6th March 2020 confirmed the election of Mr. Achobong Tambeng Paul as City Council Mayor and his deputies MR. NDOH DAVID CHI as the Frist Deputy Mayor and MR. LUCAS NGU AFONG as the second Deputy Mayor after the Municipal Election of February 2020 in Bamenda City Council, Mezam Division, North West, Cameroon.
Bamenda I has an estimated population of 62,000 inhabitants with young people covering over 60% of the population. Since the legislative and municipal elections of 2020, the Bamenda I Council has been led by Mayor MBIGHA NJAH FELIX. The mayor is asisted by First Deputy Mayor NGWAFU ANNA TANGANG, and Second Deputy Mayor ANNATOU ACHAP ABRAHAM

Bamenda I Sub-divisional Council Administration Building

Bamenda I has an estimated population of 62,000 inhabitants with young people covering over 60% of the population. Since the legislative and municipal elections of 2020, the Bamenda I Council has been led by Mayor MBIGHA NJAH FELIX. The mayor is asisted by First Deputy Mayor NGWAFU ANNA TANGANG, and Second Deputy Mayor ANNATOU ACHAP ABRAHAM
Bamenda II had a projected population of 261,285 persons in 2019 made-up of four villages (Mankon, Nsongwa, Chomba and Mbatu). Since the legislative and municipal elections of 2020, the municipality has been led by the Mayor CHENWI PETER. The mayor is asisted by First Deputy Mayor TZE LOUIS ANQWAFO, and Second Deputy Mayor JOKO FREDA NCHEA.

Bamenda II Sub-divisional Council Administration Building

Bamenda II had a projected population of 261,285 persons in 2019 made-up of four villages (Mankon, Nsongwa, Chomba and Mbatu). Since the legislative and municipal elections of 2020, the municipality has been led by the Mayor CHENWI PETER. The mayor is asisted by First Deputy Mayor TZE LOUIS ANQWAFO, and Second Deputy Mayor JOKO FREDA NCHEA.
Bamenda 3 population from 2019 is projected to be 228,190 inhabitants comprising of two main clans, Nkwen and Ndzah. Since 2013, Bamenda 3 council is administrated by Mayor M. Fongu Cletus Tanwe. Officially, he is supposed to be assisted by 2 deputy mayors. However, he is being assisted only by the Second Deputy Mayor Joseph Koti Tita.

Bamenda III Sub-divisional Council Administration Building

Bamenda 3 population from 2019 is projected to be 228,190 inhabitants comprising of two main clans, Nkwen and Ndzah. Since 2013, Bamenda 3 council is administrated by Mayor M. Fongu Cletus Tanwe. Officially, he is supposed to be assisted by 2 deputy mayors. However, he is being assisted only by the Second Deputy Mayor Joseph Koti Tita.
